  • Light scent, long flowering period
  • Flowers April to May, 45–55 cm tall
  • Strong stems, ideal for window boxes and pots

'Negrita Double' is the double sister of the well-known 'Negrita'. Its peony-like flowers glow deep royal purple with a bluish undertone and are lightly scented. Compact and sturdy, it is particularly suited to window boxes, pots and groups in the bed.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Negrita Double' are densely double and resemble peonies. Their purple is deep and rich, with a bluish undertone and fine beetroot-coloured veins. Occasionally the outer petals show a hint of green. Double flowers last a long time, so the variety adorns the garden for weeks.

At 45–55 cm tall, it suits beds and borders and is particularly effective planted in groups. Contrasts with white, yellow or orange make the purple glow, while pink and lilac create a harmonious picture. A soft pink single tulip beside it looks elegant. It is ideal for window boxes and pots, also in a bulb lasagne above grape hyacinths. The dark purple also looks especially elegant against silvery foliage, such as cotton lavender.

The double flower lasts a long time in the vase and brings its delicate scent indoors. It is of hardly any interest to bees. Like other double garden tulips, it flowers most profusely in its first year; if you want a full display every spring, replant. Cut the stems at bud stage.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, ideally in October or November when the soil has cooled. Set them 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart. Groups of 10 or more give the finest effect. A sunny spot with free-draining soil is ideal; in heavy soil add sand or grit to the planting hole. Plant more densely in window boxes and pots.

Care

Water in spring during dry spells. Cut off faded flowers and leave the foliage until it turns yellow. The bulbs can stay in the ground; for plenty of flowers, replant every year or lift after the foliage dies back and store dry. A planting basket protects against voles. Protect pots from constant wet in winter.
