  • Densely double, peony-like flowers
  • Raspberry pink with white accents
  • Petals become ruffled as they open
  • Late flowering in May, about 45–55 cm tall
  • Strong, wind-resistant stems, good cut flower

'Vogue' is a double late tulip with lush, peony-like flowers in raspberry pink. White accents appear at the base and along the edges, and the petals become increasingly ruffled as the flowers open. Strong stems carry the blooms safely through wind and weather.

About this variety

If you love peonies but do not want to wait until June, 'Vogue' is a lovely alternative. The flowers are fully double and glow in a strong raspberry pink. White patches at the base and along the edges brighten the picture. The further the flower opens, the more the petals ruffle.

At about 45–55 cm tall, 'Vogue' sits well in the middle of beds and borders. White tulips, forget-me-nots or purple alliums make good companions, as do early hardy geraniums. In pots on balconies and patios it works as the top layer of a bulb lasagne, as it flowers late. The sturdy stems keep the heavy heads upright even in wind.

In a vase it looks luxurious, and the flowers change from day to day. Double flowers are barely accessible to pollinators. Like most garden tulips, it flowers most generously in its first year; replanting regularly keeps the display full.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, ideally in October and November once the soil has cooled. Set them 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart, preferably in groups of 10 or more. A sunny spot and well-drained soil without waterlogging are important; in heavy soil, add grit to the planting hole. Plant more densely in containers.

Care

Water during dry spells in spring. Deadhead faded flowers and leave the foliage until it has turned yellow. The bulbs can stay in the ground; for full flowering, replant or lift them and store them dry. Use a planting basket if voles are a problem. Protect pots from persistent wet in winter.
