  • Double late tulip with large flowers
  • Ivory to pure white
  • Flowers in April and May
  • About 45–55 cm tall
  • Refined cut flower for pale bouquets

'White Mountain' is a double late tulip with large flowers in ivory to pure white. Its many petals give it the fullness of a peony. A refined variety for bright beds, festive containers and bouquets that goes with every colour.

About this variety

A white double tulip looks particularly festive. 'White Mountain' opens large, round flowers with many petals that shimmer ivory at first and then turn white. The fullness is reminiscent of peonies or old roses. Because double flowers last a long time, the display stays fresh for many days.

At about 45–55 cm tall, it belongs in the middle of beds and borders. White goes with everything: with dark purple tulips, blue forget-me-nots or in an all-white bed with daffodils and candytuft. In large containers on the patio it forms the top layer of a bulb lasagne above grape hyacinths. A sheltered spot protects the heavy flowers from rain.

In the vase it suits weddings, festive tables and elegant bouquets. Double flowers are barely accessible to pollinators. Like most garden tulips, it flowers best in its first year; for full flowering every year, replant in autumn.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in October and November, when the soil has cooled; December is still possible as long as the ground is open. Set them 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart, in groups of 10 or more. A sunny spot and well-drained soil without waterlogging are ideal; loosen heavy soil with sand or grit in the planting hole. Plant more densely in pots.

Care

Water in spring during dry spells. Deadhead faded flowers and leave the foliage until it is yellow. The bulbs can stay in the ground; for reliable flowering, replant or lift them and store them dry. A planting basket protects against voles. Protect large containers from persistent wet in winter.
