  • Double late tulip, relatively new variety
  • Golden yellow with a green flame outside
  • Long-lasting flowers in April and May
  • About 45–55 cm tall
  • For beds, large containers and bouquets

'Yellow Pomponette' is a relatively new double late tulip with golden-yellow flowers. The outer petals carry a green flame that makes the sunny yellow look even fresher. The full flowers last a long time and bring light to beds, large containers and vases.

About this variety

Each flower sits on its stem like a small pompom. 'Yellow Pomponette' opens densely double, round flowers in warm golden yellow. A green flame runs up the outer petals, a fresh contrast to the yellow. Double flowers last a long time, so the variety shows colour over many days.

At about 45–55 cm tall, it has its place in the middle of beds and borders. Yellow and green go with blue forget-me-nots, purple tulips or white daffodils. It also looks lively with the fresh foliage of hostas or ferns. In pots and window boxes, plant it as the top layer of a bulb lasagne above grape hyacinths. A sheltered spot protects the heavy flowers.

In the vase, even a few stems look lavish. Double flowers are barely accessible to pollinators. Like most garden tulips, it flowers best in its first year; for full flowering in the following years, replant in autumn.

Planting

Plant in October and November, as soon as the soil has cooled; December is still fine as long as the ground is open. Set the bulbs 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart, in groups of 10 or more. A sunny spot and well-drained soil without waterlogging are important; in heavy soil, add grit or sand to the planting hole. Plant more densely in pots.

Care

Water during dry spells in spring. Deadhead faded flowers and leave the foliage until it is yellow. The bulbs can stay in the ground; for reliable flowering, replant or lift them and store them dry. A planting basket helps if voles are a problem. Protect large containers from persistent wet in winter.
