  • Peony-like double flowers around 12 cm
  • Soft pink with white, each flower a little different
  • Late flowering in April and May
  • Moderate scent, height 45–55 cm
  • Popular cut flower for romantic bouquets

'Angélique' is a classic among the double late tulips. Its peony-like flowers mix soft pink with white, open slowly and are delicately scented. It extends the tulip season into May and is a romantic cut flower for beds, pots and bouquets.

About this variety

Once you have seen 'Angélique', you will recognise it again: the densely double bowls look like small peonies. The pink is pale and soft, often with white or cream patches, and becomes a little stronger towards the centre. The flowers open at a leisurely pace, so the display lasts pleasantly long.

At 45–55 cm, 'Angélique' sits well in the middle of the border. It flowers when many early tulips are already over and goes well with forget-me-nots, white daffodils or dark purple tulips. It also blends harmoniously among early perennials such as hardy geraniums or lady's mantle. In a container on the balcony it is especially effective when blue grape hyacinths beneath it complete the bulb lasagne.

In the vase 'Angélique' releases its delicate scent and opens wide. The double flowers are barely accessible to bees. Double late tulips flower best in their first year; for consistent abundance, plant more in autumn or lift the bulbs once the foliage has died back.

Planting

Planting time is September to December, ideally October to November when the soil has cooled. Set the bulbs 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart. The flowers look best in groups of 10 or more. Choose a sunny position with free-draining soil; lighten heavy soil with sand or grit. In pots the bulbs can sit shoulder to shoulder.

Care

Water in spring when the soil is dry, but avoid waterlogging. Remove spent flowers and leave the leaves until they turn yellow. For rich flowering every year, you can lift the bulbs once the foliage has died back, store them dry and replant in autumn. Keep voles away with a planting basket. Protect large containers from persistent wet in winter.
