  • Multi-flowered: up to 5 flowers per bulb
  • Densely double, peony-like
  • White and pink with green tones
  • Compact, 25–35 cm tall
  • Flowers in April and May, long-lasting

'Peggy Wonder' forms several buds from each bulb, often up to five flowers. They are densely double like small peonies and show white, pink and green tones. Its compact height makes it ideal for pots by the front door and the edge of the bed.

About this variety

'Peggy Wonder' is no ordinary tulip. Instead of one flower it carries several on branched stems. The buds are green and pink at first and open into densely double flowers in white and pastel pink, often with a darker edge. The many petals last a long time and give the plant a romantic look.

Thanks to its compact height of 25–35 cm, the variety is made for large containers beside the front door, window boxes and the front edge of the bed. It copes with wind better than tall varieties. Forget-me-nots or white violas fit well beneath. In a bulb lasagne, plant it above early crocuses. Planted in loose clumps rather than strict rows, it creates a more natural picture reminiscent of a cottage garden.

'Peggy Wonder' is a pleasure when cut too, as a single stem brings several flowers. Bees find hardly any food in double tulips. Like most double tulips, it flowers most profusely in its first year; replanting in autumn keeps the abundance. Tulips keep growing a few centimetres in the vase and lean towards the light, which gives every bouquet a lively shape.

Planting

The planting season runs from September to December. It works best in October and November, at a pinch until December as long as the ground is open. Set each bulb 10–15 cm deep, about three times its own height, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart. Choose a sunny position with loose, free-draining soil; loosen heavy soil with sand or grit. In pots, plant more closely.

Care

After the shoots appear, water only during dry spells. Cut off wilted flowers before seed forms and wait until the foliage is yellow before removing it. The bulbs can stay in the soil; for an even display, replant or lift them after the foliage dies back and store them dry over the summer. A planting basket keeps voles away. In pots, protect from constant wet in winter.
