  • Red, perfectly round flower balls
  • Flowers from April to June
  • About 25–35 cm tall
  • Good for pots and large containers
  • Loves moist to damp soil in partial shade

This drumstick primula brings strong red to the spring garden. From April to June its round flower balls stand on firm stems above the leaf rosettes. It does best in partial shade in moist soil. It also looks good in pots.

About this variety

Red drumstick primulas are rarer than the usual violet ones. Their flower balls consist of many small individual flowers, each with a pale eye. They sit on strong, upright stems that keep lengthening during flowering. The leaves are oblong, finely toothed at the edge and form a dense rosette.

A partly shaded spot with loamy, constantly moist soil is ideal. At about 25–35 cm tall it suits border edges, woodland edges and pondsides. The red glows next to white drumstick primulas, yellow globeflowers or the fresh green of ferns. In pots on a shady terrace it brings colour in spring.

Bees and bumblebees visit the flowers in spring. The drumstick primula is robust, hardy and long-lived, as long as the soil does not dry out. After flowering the leaves form larger rosettes and die back in autumn. Dividing the clumps every few years gives you new plants.

Planting

Plant 'Denticulata Red' in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and set the root collar just below the surface. Space plants 25–30 cm apart. A partly shaded spot with moist soil is ideal. Water in afterwards.

Care

Water regularly; the soil should never dry out. Check pots daily. A thin layer of compost in spring is enough. Cut off faded stems. Collect slugs and snails from the young leaves in good time.
