  • White and yellow flowers, reminiscent of orchids
  • Flowers in May
  • About 45–55 cm tall, firm stems
  • Long-lasting in the vase
  • Good for pots, hardy even at higher altitudes

'Symphony' is a Dutch iris with two-tone flowers: white inside, sunny yellow outside. Its shape is reminiscent of an orchid. It flowers in May on firm stems and is popular with florists as a long-lasting cut flower. 100 bulbs are enough for both border and vase.

About this variety

Dutch irises are slender, clear and elegant, and 'Symphony' is one of the brightest varieties. The upright petals are white, while the falls glow a warm yellow. This colour combination looks fresh and is reminiscent of an orchid. The flowers sit singly or in pairs on firm stems, surrounded by narrow, sword-shaped leaves.

At about 45–55 cm tall, 'Symphony' suits the middle of a sunny border, among early perennials or late tulips. Blue alliums, purple tulips or forget-me-nots complement the yellow and white well. It thrives in many soils, from chalky to loamy, as long as they are not wet. It also does well in pots and window boxes on the terrace.

Its great strength is the vase. Cut the stems when the bud shows colour; they will then open indoors and last a long time. With 100 bulbs you can grow some in the cutting garden and enjoy the rest in the border. Bees like to visit the flowers.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to November, about 8–10 cm deep, 25–35 cm apart or in loose groups. Choose a sunny spot with very free-draining soil. Chalky, clay, loamy and sandy soils are suitable as long as water does not stand. Make sure pots drain well.

Care

Water in spring during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging. After flowering, let the foliage die back so that the bulb can recover. The bulbs are hardy in Switzerland, even at higher altitudes; in pots, protect them from hard frost. Do not eat any part of the plant, and keep it away from children and pets.
