  • Cut flower, also popular with bees

This white Dutch iris is simple and elegant at the same time. In May and June pure white flowers open on slender stems. They suit any colour scheme, in the border as well as in a bouquet. With 30 bulbs you can create lovely groups. The bulbs are hardy in Switzerland and do well in pots.

About this variety

White is a particularly versatile colour for Dutch iris. The flowers have the typical slender iris shape with three upright and three drooping petals. A small yellow marking often sits on the falls, giving the white some warmth. The stems are slim and upright, the leaves narrow and grass-like.

Plant the bulbs in groups between perennials that flower later, or with tulips and alliums. White glows at dusk and brightens any planting. Blue hardy geraniums, catmint or dark purple tulips make lovely neighbours. The iris also does well in pots and large containers on the balcony, as long as water can drain away.

As a cut flower, the white Dutch iris is a classic. Cut the stems when the bud shows colour and stand them in fresh water. In bouquets with peonies or baby's breath it looks elegant and calm. In the garden, bees visit the flowers. In the right spot it returns every year.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to November, about 8–10 cm deep and 8–10 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot. The soil should be loamy or sandy and well drained. In pots, add a drainage layer.

Care

Water only in dry spells in spring and avoid waterlogging. After flowering, let the foliage yellow completely before removing it. The bulbs are hardy in Switzerland and stay in the ground. Do not eat any part of the plant and keep it away from children and pets.
