'Yo-Yo' is a low bearded iris for the very front of the border. Its purple flowers appear in April and May, before most tall perennials really get going. It is hardy even at higher altitudes and is as happy in the rock garden as along a path.

About this variety

Dwarf bearded irises have the same elegant flowers as their tall relatives, just in a handy size. 'Yo-Yo' bears purple flowers with the typical beard on the falls. They open in April and May, when the garden is still fairly low, and add a strong splash of colour. The mid-green, sword-shaped leaves stay upright and tidy.

At about 15–25 cm tall, 'Yo-Yo' belongs right at the front: at the edge of borders, along sunny paths and in the rock garden. The purple stands out well among pale gravel, creeping phlox, aubrieta or thyme. It grows in sun and light partial shade but flowers most freely in a bright spot. It is only partly suited to containers.

The plant is modest and long-lived. Once established, the rhizome spreads slowly and forms small groups. 'Yo-Yo' is mainly a garden plant and less intended for the vase. It shows its greatest value in the spring border, where it fills the gap between tulips and early summer perennials with colour.

Planting

Plant the rhizome in summer, from July to September. Set it flat so the top remains visible; only the roots go into the soil. Keep 25–30 cm between plants. Choose a sunny to partly shaded spot with free-draining, loamy or sandy soil.

Care

Water only in the first weeks after planting and during long dry spells. Feed sparingly in spring, as too much nitrogen encourages rot. Do not mulch, because the rhizome needs sun. Cut off faded stems. The perennial is hardy, even at higher altitudes; divide the plant after a few years.
