  • Single flowers in cool violet
  • Fragrant, ideal for bouquets and table vases
  • Flowers from July to September
  • Height about 35–45 cm
  • Suitable for sun and partial shade

'Blue Single' carries simple, single flowers in cool violet with a delicate, fresh scent. This freesia flowers from July to September and brings a colour that has become rare to the summer border. With 50 corms you have enough for groups in the garden and many small bouquets.

About this variety

Violet is a fairly rare colour in freesias, and 'Blue Single' shows it in a clear form. The single, funnel-shaped flowers line up along one side of slightly curved stems and open one after another from the bottom upwards. So each stem stays attractive for a long time. Add to this the typical freesia scent, delicate and fresh.

In the garden the variety reaches about 35–45 cm, so it fits well at the front of a border. It looks lovely next to silvery foliage such as lamb's ears or among low grasses. It tolerates sun and light partial shade. It does only moderately well in pots; if you try, use a wide container with good drainage.

Its real stage is the vase. Cut the stems when the first flower opens, and the remaining buds will open in water. A small bouquet scents a whole room. With 50 corms, a dedicated cutting bed is worthwhile, from which you can harvest again and again from July to September.

Planting

Only plant the corms outside after the Ice Saints, from mid-May to June, as they are sensitive to frost. Set them about 5 cm deep and 5–10 cm apart, tip upwards, in loose, sandy loam. A warm, sunny to partially shaded spot is ideal. If you want earlier flowers, start the corms in pots indoors from March.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist, without waterlogging. The slender stems tip over easily; a net or a few canes with string give support. Remove faded stems. In autumn, before the frost, lift the corms, let them dry and store them frost-free and dry.
