  • Flowers April to May
  • Height about 45–55 cm
  • Strong, weather-resistant stems
  • For beds, large containers and the vase

'Bendigo' shows a deep, rich raspberry red with a silky sheen on the petals. It stands on strong stems and copes well with wind and weather. Planted on its own it is a strong colour accent; next to pastel shades it makes an effective contrast.

About this variety

Not all reds are the same: 'Bendigo' is a deep raspberry red with a satin sheen in sunlight. The flowers are expressive and make an impact even from a distance. The red stays rich and clear throughout flowering.

At about 45–55 cm it belongs in the middle of the bed or border. Planted on its own in larger groups, it sets a strong accent. Next to soft pink or cream tulips, white forget-me-nots or pale grasses the red stands out even more. In large containers at the entrance or on the terrace it looks festive. Plant at least 15 bulbs together so the accent has an effect. Low cushion perennials in front later hide the dying foliage. The raspberry red also shows up well among spring-flowering shrubs with pale foliage.

'Bendigo' is well suited to the vase; the strong stems carry the flowers securely. Bees hardly visit it. Like many garden tulips it flowers best in its first year and often more weakly later, so regular replanting is worthwhile.

Planting

Planting time runs from September to December; it works best in October and November in cool soil. Set the bulbs 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart. A sunny position and loose, well-drained soil are important, as the bulbs rot in wet ground. In loamy or clay soil a handful of grit in the planting hole helps. In pots and window boxes, plant more closely, ideally in several layers.

Care

Water in spring only during longer dry spells. Pinch off spent flowers including the developing seed and leave the foliage until it yellows, as this is how the bulb builds up strength. The bulbs can stay in the ground; since garden tulips flower best in their first year, it is worth replanting or lifting the bulbs once the foliage has died back and storing them dry. Where voles occur, a planting basket protects. In winter, stand pots where they are sheltered from constant rain.
