  • Fringed, jagged petal edges
  • Play of red and yellow
  • Flowers in April and May
  • About 45–55 cm tall
  • Popular cut flower, lovely in rose beds

'Tiano' is a fringed tulip in red and yellow. Its petals end in finely jagged edges that catch the light. As a late splash of colour, it brightens borders and rose beds, and in the vase its fringed texture adds a lively accent.

About this variety

Fringed tulips look as if someone has decorated their edges with scissors. In 'Tiano', this fine texture meets a lively play of red and yellow. The jagged rims catch the light and give the classic cup shape a playful, elegant touch. Each flower shows the two colours distributed slightly differently, so a group looks lively and varied.

At about 45–55 cm tall, 'Tiano' suits beds and borders. Scatter groups among perennials so that it works as a splash of colour, or plant it in a rose bed, where it flowers before the roses come into leaf. With blue forget-me-nots, dark purple tulips or bronze grasses, it looks especially warm. In a large container it belongs in the upper layer of a bulb lasagne.

It is popular as a cut flower because the fringes give every bouquet texture. It is of little interest to pollinators. Like most garden tulips, it flowers best in its first year; replanting in autumn keeps the effect going for many years.

Planting

Plant ideally in October and November, once the soil has cooled; September to December is possible as long as the ground is not frozen. Set the bulbs 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart, ideally in groups of 10 or more. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil; in heavy soils, add sand or grit to the planting hole. In pots, plant more closely.

Care

Water if spring is dry. Pinch off faded flowers and leave the foliage until it yellows. The bulbs can stay in the ground; for full flowering every year, replant or lift them and store them dry. A planting basket protects against voles. Protect pots from persistent wet in winter.
