'Ivory Bells' is a pale form of Fritillaria persica. Many ivory-white bells with a delicate green flush hang on tall spikes above silvery blue-green foliage. A refined, calm presence in the spring border and a favourite with florists.

About this variety

This variety is a mutation of the dark-flowered Fritillaria persica. Instead of plum violet, it shows a soft ivory with a delicate green shimmer. Numerous small bells hang on a long spike, with wavy, blue-green leaves with a silvery sheen spiralling below.

At about 90–110 cm tall, 'Ivory Bells' belongs in the middle of the border, ideally in groups of three or more. The contrast with the dark 'Adiyaman' or with black-violet tulips is very lovely. It also looks fresh and light beside white daffodils and silvery perennials. A warm, sunny spot with gravel suits it.

Bees like to visit the bells. In a vase the long spikes are a special design element and last well. Fritillaries are usually avoided by voles and deer. If the site and drainage are right, the plant can flower again in the following years. Planting several bulbs gives you a refined group that brings calm and elegance to the border in spring. The pale spike shows its full effect particularly among low cushion-forming perennials.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November in a sunny, warm place. Set them 10–20 cm deep on a bed of sand, tip upwards, and space them 15–30 cm apart. The soil must be loose and very free-draining.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it yellows. Keep the spot dry in summer and avoid waterlogging in winter. At higher altitudes a covering of brushwood helps. In a pot, overwinter protected from frost and fairly dry.
