Veronica gentianoides 'Blue Bittersweet' is a gentian speedwell with loose spikes of pale blue to whitish flowers finely veined in blue. They grow in May and June from flat, glossy leaf rosettes. A delicate, early perennial for border edges, rock gardens and partial shade.

About this variety

Gentian speedwell comes from the mountains of the Caucasus. Its leaves resemble gentian leaves and form flat, dense rosettes that cover the ground well. In late spring loose spikes of cup-shaped flowers rise from them. On 'Blue Bittersweet' they are pale blue to almost white with fine blue veining.

The plant is low-growing and suits border edges, rock gardens and the front row. Sun to partial shade and a moist, loamy or sandy soil are ideal. Early partners are Siberian bugloss, bergenias, primulas, lady's mantle and low hardy geraniums.

Bees and bumblebees use the early flowers as food. The spikes can be cut for small spring posies. The perennial is hardy and long-lived. The rosettes stay green in mild winters and spread slowly. If you want colour at the border edge in spring, plant several in groups. Among bulbs such as daffodils and tulips this creates a delicate pale blue carpet that takes over seamlessly after the bulbs have flowered and makes a lovely transition to summer.

Planting

Plant in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October in a sunny to partly shaded spot. The planting hole should be twice the size of the root ball, with the root collar just covered. Space plants 30–40 cm apart and water in.

Care

Water during dry spells; the soil should stay moist. A little compost in spring is enough. Cut the faded spikes back to ground level, leaving the rosettes. Divide the plant every few years after flowering.
