  • Deep, velvety purple with darker blotches in the throat
  • Flowers about 10 cm across
  • Flowers from July to September
  • Height about 90–110 cm, firmly upright spikes
  • Long-stemmed cut flower, popular show variety

'Purple Flora' is a large-flowered gladiolus in deep, velvety purple. Even darker blotches sit in the throat, giving the flower depth. Several flowers open at once on the firm spikes, from July to September. A variety for anyone who loves strong colours in the garden and the vase.

About this variety

If you are looking for a truly rich purple, you will find it in 'Purple Flora'. The flowers look velvety and slightly ruffled, and their shade is reminiscent of royal purple. Darker blotches stand out in the throat and draw the eye into the flower. Several flowers around 10 cm across open at once on each spike, so the plant looks full and compact for a long time. It has no scent, but all the more presence.

At about 90 to 110 cm tall, 'Purple Flora' suits the back of a sunny border. Planted in larger groups, it forms a colourful backdrop for lower perennials. Partners with silvery foliage such as lamb's ears or Russian sage look lovely, along with pale blue and soft pink. If you prefer something bolder, place orange daylilies or zinnias beside it. It is only partly suited to pots and is happier in the border.

The vase shows why the variety is valued by florists and at shows. The long stems hold the spikes straight, and the flowers open one after another from the bottom up. Cut when the lowest two buds show colour. You will then enjoy for many days a bouquet that makes an impact with just a few stems.

Planting

Plant the tubers outdoors from mid-April to June, about 10–12 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. Plant a new group every two to three weeks and flowering will continue into September. Choose a sunny spot with moist, loamy to sandy soil, chalky if you like. The tubers do not tolerate waterlogging.

Care

Water regularly in dry weeks and feed at the start of growth with a potassium-rich flower fertiliser. In wind, a cane or earthing up the soil around the stems helps. Cut off faded spikes but leave the foliage. The tubers are not hardy: lift them in October, let them dry and store them cool and frost-free.
