  • Larger, longer-lasting spikes
  • Flowers in March and April, 10–20 cm tall
  • Robust and naturalising

'Blue Spike' is a double grape hyacinth. Instead of small bells it bears full, fluffy spikes in light to mid-blue. They look larger than those of ordinary varieties and last longer. A striking variant for border edges and pots.

About this variety

'Blue Spike' arose as a mutation of Muscari armeniacum. Its individual flowers are double, which makes the spikes look full, round and almost fluffy. The colour lies between flax blue and mid-blue, and some flowers have greenish tips. Because the flowers are sterile, they last particularly long.

At about 10–20 cm tall, it belongs at border edges, along paths and in rock gardens. In lawns or beneath trees it forms a dense blue carpet. Yellow daffodils, white tulips and rock cress are lovely partners. In pots, the unusual flower shape is shown off particularly well up close.

'Blue Spike' is well suited to small posies; in the vase the full spikes look like little brushes. The bulbs multiply by offsets. Occasionally single flowers reappear; this is in the nature of the variety. Voles and deer generally leave grape hyacinths alone. The plant is robust and flowers reliably every year.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to November, 5–8 cm deep. A spacing of 5–8 cm is enough to create a closed carpet in the very first year. Make sure the tip points upwards. The soil should be loose and free-draining.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it has yellowed, as this is how the bulbs build up strength for the next year. In a lawn, mow only after that. Otherwise grape hyacinths need hardly any care. If the clumps become too dense, divide them in summer after a few years.
