'White Petticoat' is a white hoop-petticoat daffodil whose flowers look like little starched skirts. The widely flared cup shines white, and the narrow petals form a small star. It stays low, naturalises readily and is something special for rock gardens and pots.

About this variety

The flowers of 'White Petticoat' look like small white hoop petticoats. The cup is wide, funnel-shaped and glossy white, and the outer petals are narrow and pointed. Each bulb produces several flowers. The foliage is thin and grass-like. It is one of the largest pure white forms of Narcissus bulbocodium.

At about 10–20 cm tall it belongs in the rock garden, at low border edges and in pots, where you can admire it up close. Plant it in groups. It combines beautifully with its yellow sister 'Golden Bells', with crocuses or with Puschkinia. It also does well between shrubs and in short grass.

In suitable soil 'White Petticoat' naturalises and returns every year without special care. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. A few stems fit into a small glass on the table. It is of little importance to bees.

Planting

Plant the small bulbs from September to November, about 5–8 cm deep and 5–8 cm apart, tip upwards. They like a sunny to partly shaded spot and very free-draining soil. In heavy soil, mix in sand or gravel.

Care

Let the fine foliage die back after flowering. Keep the planting site fairly dry in summer. In pots, protect the bulbs from constant wet in winter. When the groups become dense, divide them in summer. All parts of daffodils are poisonous. Wear gloves when planting, as the sap can irritate the skin.
