  • Fresh green leaves with a yellow margin
  • Violet flower bells from June to August
  • Tall flower stems above the foliage
  • For partial shade and woodland edges
  • Robust and long-lived

Hosta fortunei 'Aureomarginata' is one of the most widely planted hostas. Its fresh green leaves have a yellow margin that brightens shady areas. From June to August violet flower bells appear on tall stems. A robust, proven perennial for partial shade and woodland edges.

About this variety

Some hostas have been at home in gardens for decades simply because they are reliable. 'Aureomarginata' is one of them. Its leaves are fresh green and edged with a yellow margin that makes the clump look bright even from afar. From June to August violet flower bells stand on long stems above the foliage.

With flower stems about 90–110 cm tall, this hosta is a focal point in partial shade. The mound of foliage itself stays considerably lower. It likes moist, loamy and humus-rich soil. It feels at home at the woodland edge, under light trees or on the north side of a house. Lovely partners are ferns, astilbes, barrenwort and blue-flowered Siberian bugloss.

Bees and bumblebees visit the flowers. The leaves last a long time in a vase and are good as greenery for bouquets. Over the years the clump becomes ever larger and more beautiful. Hostas are very long-lived and can stay in the same place for many years.

Planting

Plant in spring (March to May) or in autumn (September and October). A partly shaded spot with moist, fertile soil is ideal. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and set the shoot buds 2–3 cm deep. Space the plants 40–60 cm apart and water in well.

Care

Water in dry weather, especially in the first year and in pots. Spread compost around the plant in spring. Slugs and snails are the biggest threat when the shoots emerge, so check the plant on damp nights. Cut off faded stems and remove withered foliage in late autumn. Division is possible every four to five years.
