  • Thick, large, blue-green leaves
  • White, mauve-flushed flowers
  • Flowers in June and July
  • Little troubled by slugs and snails
  • For woodland edges, under trees and containers

Hosta sieboldiana 'Elegans' is a large, classic blue-leaved hosta. Its thick, blue-green leaves look graphic and tend to be avoided by slugs and snails. In June and July white flowers with a delicate mauve flush appear. With ten plants you can design whole shady areas.

About this variety

'Elegans' is one of the best-known hostas of the sieboldiana group. The leaves are large, thick and blue-green. Their firm surface looks almost frosted and gives the clump a graphic, calm presence. In June and July white flowers with a delicate mauve tone appear.

With flower stems about 90–110 cm tall and a broad clump of foliage, this hosta is a focal point in partial shade. It grows best in moist, loamy, humus-rich soil. It shows to advantage under trees, at the woodland edge or in a large container. Delicate ferns, woodland grasses, astilbes and bugbane are suitable companions. Ten plants create an impressive area.

Bumblebees visit the flowers. The blue leaves are popular greenery for large bouquets and last a long time in a vase. Thanks to the thick foliage, slugs and snails do less damage than to many other hostas. The plant grows slowly but lives to a great age and becomes ever more impressive over the years.

Planting

Plant the hosta in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October. Choose a partly shaded spot with humus-rich, moist soil. The planting hole should be twice the size of the root ball, with the shoot buds 2–3 cm below the surface. Space the plants 40–60 cm apart and water in thoroughly.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist and water deeply in dry spells. Add a layer of compost in spring. Protect the young shoots from slugs and snails, which like to eat the tender leaves. You can cut faded stems back to ground level; the foliage dies back in autumn. Every few years the clump can be divided in spring.
