  • Butter-yellow to cream flowers
  • Large, dense flower spikes
  • About 25–35 cm tall
  • Flowers in March and April
  • Sweet, long-lasting fragrance

'Gipsy Princess' brings a touch of sunshine to the spring bed. Its large, dense flower spikes glow butter yellow to cream and have a sweet, long-lasting fragrance. The waxy individual flowers last a long time in the garden and in the vase.

About this variety

Yellow hyacinths are rare, and 'Gipsy Princess' shows a particularly warm shade. The individual flowers are butter yellow to creamy, with an almost waxy surface. They sit tightly packed on a sturdy stem and form a large, even spike.

At about 25–35 cm tall, it belongs at the front of a bed, in borders and in pots. Blue hyacinths, purple grape hyacinths and dark pansies make the yellow glow. Together with the salmon-coloured 'Gipsy Queen' it forms a warm pastel duo. In a bulb lasagne pot it fits in the middle layer above early tulips.

The fragrance is sweet and long-lasting, ideal for a spot beside the front door. In a vase the spikes stay fresh for several days. In the garden the variety flowers again in the following years, then usually with looser spikes. Plant several bulbs together so the colour shows well. Groups of ten bulbs make a glowing patch.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to November, 10–15 cm deep with the pointed end up. Leave 12–15 cm between them and choose a sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil. In a pot, good potting compost with a drainage layer is all you need. Wear gloves, as the bulbs can cause skin irritation.

Care

Remove the withered flower spikes, but leave the foliage until it turns yellow. In pots, water moderately and avoid standing water in the saucer. After a few years you can dig up dense groups in summer and replant them elsewhere. Hyacinths can irritate the skin; gloves protect you.
