  • Strong pinkish red to carmine, rare in hyacinths
  • Proven variety, on sale since around 1910
  • Fragrant, medium scent strength
  • Flowering in March and April, 20–30 cm tall
  • Good in pots and as a cut flower

'Jan Bos' is the red one among hyacinths: its dense spikes glow in a strong pinkish red to carmine. The variety has been planted for over a hundred years and has lost none of its charm. Add to that a sweet fragrance that heralds spring in March and April.

About this variety

Red hyacinths are rarer than you might think, and 'Jan Bos' is one of the best known. Its colour lies between pinkish red, fuchsia and carmine, looking warmer or cooler depending on the light. The star-shaped individual flowers sit tightly on the spike and form a dense, compact head.

At 20–30 cm tall, 'Jan Bos' is ideal for pots, bowls and the front edge of a bed. It glows particularly next to white hyacinths, golden-yellow daffodils or blue grape hyacinths. It also looks good in a rock garden or in a bulb lasagne in a large container. If the spikes become heavy towards the end of flowering, a small stake helps.

Bees like to visit the flowers, as there is still little food about in March. In a vase 'Jan Bos' lasts well and fills the room with its sweet fragrance. Voles and deer usually leave hyacinths alone. In the garden it flowers for several years, and the spikes become a little looser over time.

Planting

The best planting time is between September and November; as long as the ground is not frozen, December also works. Set the bulbs pointed end up, 10–15 cm deep and 12–15 cm apart. Choose a spot in sun or partial shade with loose, free-draining soil. Gloves protect you from the skin-irritating substances in the bulb.

Care

After flowering, pinch off the spent stem so that no energy goes into seed. Leave the green foliage until it turns yellow, as it feeds the bulb for the next season. In pots, water moderately and avoid waterlogging. As the sap can irritate the skin, gloves are recommended.
