  • 10 bulbs in purple and white
  • Classic single hyacinths
  • Fragrant, flowering in April
  • About 25–35 cm tall
  • For beds, pots and as a cut flower

Two colours that bring out the best in each other: this mix combines purple and white hyacinths. In April it creates a fresh, elegant picture that works just as well in pots as in the bed. And of course every spike has a sweet fragrance.

About this variety

Purple and white is one of the loveliest colour pairings in the spring garden. The dark purple gives depth, while the white brings light. The densely set spikes of these single hyacinths form sturdy heads that stand out clearly against the fresh green. Because both colours flower at the same time in April, the result is a cohesive, calm picture without gaps.

At about 25–35 cm tall, the mix belongs at the front of beds and borders. Set the bulbs loosely mixed in groups to create a natural alternation of colours. White daffodils, blue grape hyacinths or lilac tulips go well with them. In grey or white pots the combination looks particularly refined.

The mix also works well in a vase: a few purple and white stems already make a small, fragrant bouquet. Place the pots near your seating area so you can enjoy the sweet fragrance. In the garden the hyacinths return for several years, with the spikes becoming looser. For a larger area it is worth combining several packs and distributing the colours loosely. That way the planting looks harmonious and even from every direction.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn, ideally from September to November, at a depth of 10–15 cm. Leave 12–15 cm between them and point the tip upwards. In heavy soils a little sand in the planting hole helps water drain away. Sun to partial shade is right. Wear gloves while doing so, as the bulbs can cause skin irritation.

Care

Let the leaves die back completely after flowering; only then can they be removed. You can remove faded flowers straight away. In a lawn or meadow, wait to mow until the foliage has yellowed. Gloves protect against skin irritation when working on the plant. In the following years the spikes become more natural and a little looser.
