  • Pastel lilac with pink veins and a mauve edge
  • Dark red flower stem
  • Sweet fragrance, flowering in March and April
  • About 20–30 cm tall
  • Lovely cut flower

'Splendid Cornelia' shows a soft pastel lilac with darker pink veins and a hint of mauve at the edge. The dense spikes are sweetly scented and stand on a dark red stem. A refined, understated hyacinth for paths, terraces and the vase.

About this variety

On closer inspection 'Splendid Cornelia' shows many nuances: the base tone is a soft lilac, the veins are pink and the edges mauve. The small star-shaped flowers sit densely on the spike, and the stem is coloured dark red. The result is a soft, harmonious colour impression. Among hyacinths it flowers in the middle of the season, linking early and late varieties.

At about 20–30 cm tall, the variety belongs along paths, steps and terraces, where you notice its fragrance as you pass. With pansies and grape hyacinths it creates a picture in many shades of violet. It also suits white tulips or a rock garden. In pots and bowls it looks elegant.

As a cut flower 'Splendid Cornelia' is particularly lovely, and the pastel colour suits many spring bouquets. Bees visit the flowers in March and April. Voles and deer mostly leave hyacinths alone. The bulbs flower for several years. With 25 bulbs you can line a path on both sides or plant several pots for the terrace. The soft colour goes with almost all other spring flowers.

Planting

The best planting time is between September and November; as long as the ground is not frozen, December also works. Set the bulbs pointed end up, 10–15 cm deep and 12–15 cm apart. Choose a spot in sun or partial shade with loose, free-draining soil. Gloves protect you from the skin-irritating substances in the bulb.

Care

Let the leaves die back completely after flowering; only then can they be removed. You can remove faded flowers straight away. In a lawn or meadow, wait to mow until the foliage has yellowed. Gloves protect against skin irritation when working on the plant. In the following years the spikes become more natural and a little looser.
