'Marie Curie Diamond' is a yellow Jonquilla narcissus bred in Britain. Its name commemorates the diamond jubilee of the charity Marie Curie. With 100 bulbs you can plant generous yellow drifts that brighten the garden in April and return every year.

About this variety

Jonquilla narcissi are known for their dainty flowers, often carried several to a stem, and their narrow foliage. 'Marie Curie Diamond' shows this type in a friendly, even yellow. The variety comes from Great Britain and was named for the diamond jubilee of the Marie Curie charity, which cares for people with serious illnesses. This also makes it a lovely gift with meaning.

At around 45–55 cm tall, it suits the middle of spring beds and borders. The large pack of 100 bulbs is particularly suitable for meadows, orchards and woodland edges, where it looks most natural in loose drifts. Blue grape hyacinths, squills or early white tulips go well with it. In containers and boxes it brings colour to balconies and patios.

For the vase, cut the stems when the buds are just showing colour. Daffodils are mostly avoided by voles and deer, which makes them valuable for wildlife-friendly gardens. In the right spot, 'Marie Curie Diamond' naturalises and forms ever denser clumps over the years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded spot is ideal. The soil may be loamy, sandy or chalky but should remain free-draining. For a natural effect, scatter the bulbs loosely and plant them where they land.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow, as this is how the bulb gathers strength for next year. In a meadow, only mow once the foliage has died back. After a few years you can divide dense clumps in summer. Daffodils are poisonous; their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
