  • Jonquilla narcissus with a two-tone effect
  • Yellow petals, cup turns white
  • Delicate scent
  • Flowers in April, height about 45–55 cm
  • 100 bulbs for large plantings

'Verdin' is a Jonquilla narcissus with a reversed colour scheme: the petals are yellow, while the cup opens yellow and turns white over time. It resembles the well-known 'Pipit' and has a delicate scent. With 100 bulbs, you can create large, lively groups in beds, meadows and large containers.

About this variety

In most bicoloured daffodils, the cup is darker than the petals. 'Verdin' does it the other way round: the petals are bright yellow and the cup fades to white as it matures. In a group, flowers at different stages stand side by side, creating a lively picture. Like many Jonquilla narcissi, it has narrow foliage and a delicate scent.

With 100 bulbs you can plan generously: in bands through a meadow, under fruit trees, along borders or in large containers. At about 45–55 cm tall, it sits well in the middle of spring beds. Lovely companions are blue grape hyacinths, squills, forget-me-nots and white tulips. It also does well in a rock garden.

It is good for the vase too, where the scent comes into its own indoors. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. Leave the bulbs in place and they will multiply, forming dense clumps over the years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, tip upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. Sunny to partly shaded spots with well-drained, moist soil are ideal. Large quantities are easiest to plant in groups of ten to fifteen bulbs. In a meadow, a bulb planter helps.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow so the bulb can build up strength for next year. In a lawn, wait to mow until the leaves have died back. You can divide dense clumps in summer after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
