  • One of the earliest tulips, March to April
  • Bright yellow with a red flame
  • Opens like a waterlily in the sun
  • Low, 20–30 cm
  • Long-lived, comes back every year

'Stresa' is one of the very first tulips of the year and often flowers together with large crocuses. Its bright yellow flowers are flamed with red and open wide like waterlilies in the sun. It stays low and sturdy and returns year after year.

About this variety

Kaufmanniana tulips are also called waterlily tulips, because their flowers open flat and star-shaped in the sun. 'Stresa' glows in a strong yellow, overlaid with carmine-red flames. When closed, the flower mainly shows the red of the outside; when open, the sunny yellow of the inside.

At 20–30 cm tall, 'Stresa' suits rock gardens, the front of borders and pots. Because it flowers so early, crocuses, glory-of-the-snow, squills and early daffodils are its natural partners. In bowls on the balcony it brings colour as early as March. It copes well with wind. In front of a hedge or a pale wall, colour and form show up particularly well, because the calm background sets off the flowers.

Cut short, it brings the first touch of spring to a small vase. Tulips offer bees hardly anything. Like other Kaufmanniana tulips, 'Stresa' is long-lived and returns for many years in a sunny, free-draining spot. Do not put tulips straight into the same vase as daffodils, as their sap makes tulips wilt faster; standing the daffodils separately first helps.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December. In Switzerland October to November is ideal, and December is still possible as long as the ground is not frozen. Planting depth 10–15 cm, tip upwards, spacing 10–12 cm. The spot should be sunny and the soil free-draining; in heavy soil, sprinkle a little sand into the planting hole. In pots and window boxes the bulbs can be placed close together.

Care

Water a little during dry weeks in spring; otherwise the plant needs hardly any care. Pinch off seed heads and let the foliage turn yellow so that the bulb can build up strength. There is no need to lift the bulbs; the plants stay in place for many years. Where voles are common, a planting basket is recommended. Protect large containers from prolonged rain in winter.
