  • White flowers with a fine, dark purple edge
  • Flowers up to 18 cm across, medium scent
  • LA hybrid: longiflorum x Asiatic lily
  • About 90–110 cm tall, well suited to pots
  • Also tolerates chalky soil

'Eyeliner' lives up to its name: each white petal is outlined with a fine, dark purple line. This LA hybrid combines the large flowers of the longiflorum lily with the robustness of Asiatic lilies. Add to that a pleasant, medium-strength scent.

About this variety

At first glance, 'Eyeliner' is a classic white lily. Only up close do you see the twist: a narrow, almost black-purple rim traces each petal, like a line of eyeliner. This makes the pure white of the centre look even clearer. The flowers reach up to 18 cm and have a pleasant scent without being overpowering.

At about 90 to 110 cm tall, 'Eyeliner' suits the middle of the bed and, unlike many lilies, also pots and large containers. On a terrace or balcony, you can admire the fine markings up close. In the bed, it goes well with dark purple sages, silvery lamb's ears or black-red heuchera, which pick up the dark edge. It thrives in sun and partial shade and copes with chalky soil.

In the vase, this variety is an eye-catcher for anyone looking for something special. Just a few stems are enough for an elegant bouquet, and the scent fills a room. Cut the stems when the first bud opens and remove the anthers. In the garden, the bulb stays in place for many years and grows stronger over time.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn between September and November or in spring between February and May. Plant them about three times as deep as the bulb is tall, i.e. 15–20 cm, 25–30 cm apart. Sun to partial shade is fine as long as the base is shaded: 'head in the sun, feet in the shade'. Moist, well-drained soil, including chalky soil, is suitable. In pots, a drainage layer ensures that water can run off.

Care

Water evenly, more often in pots than in beds, and avoid waterlogging. During growth, feeding with bulb fertiliser does it good. Watch out for the lily beetle and remove beetles and larvae immediately. Lilies are highly poisonous to cats, including the pollen and vase water. The bulbs are hardy in Switzerland; move pots to a sheltered place in winter.
