  • One of the earliest large-cupped daffodils
  • Golden-yellow petals
  • Ruffled cup in orange and yellow
  • Flowers from March
  • Height about 45–55 cm

'Early Flame' is one of the earliest large-cupped daffodils and opens the season as early as March. Golden-yellow petals frame a ruffled cup in orange and yellow. It brings warmth to the still bare garden when only a few other flowers are out.

About this variety

'Early Flame' opens its flowers as early as March. The petals are golden yellow, and the ruffled cup glows orange with yellow tones. Like a small flame, it adds a warm accent to the still cool early spring. As a large-cupped daffodil it has a clearly defined cup that is shorter than a trumpet.

At around 45–55 cm tall, it suits beds, borders and meadows. Because it flowers so early, it goes well with other early bloomers such as crocuses, glory-of-the-snow and squills. In pots by the front door it is one of the first to greet the spring. It also glows in front of evergreen shrubs. A spot against a warm house wall often brings flowering forward by a few days.

As a cut flower it brings early colour indoors. The bulbs naturalise and form clumps over the years. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. It offers some food for the first insects of the year, and combined with crocuses it creates a bee-friendly spring picture.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, tip upwards. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal. A warm, sheltered position encourages early flowering.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. You can pinch off faded flowers. In a lawn, only mow after the leaves have died back. Divide dense clumps after a few years. For mixed bouquets, stand the daffodils in water on their own for half a day first, as their sap makes other cut flowers wilt.
