  • 100 bulbs for large areas
  • Yellow petals with an orange cup
  • Early flowers in March
  • Height about 35–45 cm
  • Naturalises well, also a cut flower

'February Fortune' is a large-cupped daffodil in yellow with an orange cup that flowers as early as March. With 100 bulbs you can create a glowing drift that heralds spring early. It naturalises well and returns in greater numbers every year. An early, cheerful greeting to spring.

About this variety

Yellow petals and an orange cup: 'February Fortune' wears the classic colours of spring. As a large-cupped daffodil, it has a clearly defined cup that is shorter than a trumpet daffodil's. It flowers early and brings colour to the garden as early as March. The flowers are lightly scented.

At around 35–45 cm tall, it suits meadows, lawns, banks and the woodland edge. With 100 bulbs you can densely plant an area of about one and a half square metres, or considerably more if spread loosely. Good companions are crocuses, squills and glory-of-the-snow, which flower at the same time. If you prefer to plant in a bed, set them in groups of ten to fifteen bulbs between late-emerging perennials. That way the space is not left empty after the daffodils finish, and the perennials take over the colour for summer.

Daffodils naturalise well and form dense stands over the years. Voles and deer usually avoid them. For the vase, cut the stems when the buds show colour. Daffodils are not an important food source for bees, but together with crocuses they create a lively spring picture.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, tip upwards. For a meadow, scatter the bulbs loosely and plant them where they land. Sun to partial shade and free-draining soil are ideal.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. In a lawn, only mow once the leaves have died back. In the bed you can pinch off faded flowers. Divide dense clumps after a few years. Freshly cut daffodils release a slime into the water that harms other flowers: stand them on their own for a few hours before mixing them.
