'Sempre Avanti' is a historic large-cupped daffodil that has been planted for almost ninety years. Pale, creamy white petals frame a ruffled orange cup. The variety is very vigorous and long-lived and is particularly suitable for large plantings in beds and meadows.

About this variety

Some varieties endure simply because they work. 'Sempre Avanti', Italian for «always forward», is one of them. The large flowers have pale, creamy white petals and a ruffled cup that at first shows a soft orange and turns golden yellow over time. The contrast is fresh and clearly visible even from a distance.

At around 45–55 cm tall, it belongs in borders, along woodland edges and above all in large areas where its vigour shows. In a meadow or under fruit trees it forms broad drifts over the years. Blue squills, bluebells or dark tulips go well with it. In containers it adds warm accents.

It is also suitable as a cut flower. Voles and deer mostly avoid daffodils. 'Sempre Avanti' is robust and multiplies reliably. That makes it a good choice for gardens where daffodils should grow for many years without much work.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. Sunny to partially shaded spots with free-draining, moist soil are ideal. For a meadow, scatter the bulbs loosely and plant them with a bulb planter. Avoid waterlogging.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow, so that the bulb gathers strength for next year. In a lawn, only mow once the foliage has died back. You can divide dense clumps in summer after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous, and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
