'Red Morning' is an imposing OT lily with flowers up to 25 cm in warm shades of red and yellow. On densely leaved stems about 160–180 cm tall, it towers over almost everything in the border. A sweet scent makes it a delight near your seating area too.

About this variety

Once you see 'Red Morning' in flower, you understand the name: the colours recall a warm summer morning. The flowers combine red with yellow tones and grow up to 25 cm across. As an OT hybrid, it carries the vigour of the trumpet lily and the lavish flowers of the Oriental lily. The stems are thick and densely leaved.

At about 160 to 180 cm tall, it belongs at the back of the border, in front of a hedge or at the woodland edge. Coneflowers, daylilies or tall grasses in front shade its base. In a large, heavy container it also makes an impression on the terrace. It tolerates sun and partial shade and copes with clay soil too.

The sweet scent attracts bees and other pollinators. In the vase, a single stem with several flowers is often enough for a tall floor vase. Remove the anthers so the pollen does not stain. Over the years the bulb grows stronger and the plant carries more flowers.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn from September to November or in spring from February to May. Set them about three times as deep as the bulb is tall, around 15–20 cm, and 25–30 cm apart. A spot in sun or partial shade with cool feet is ideal: 'head in the sun, feet in the shade'. The soil can be clay, loam or sand but needs good drainage.

Care

Water thoroughly in dry spells and avoid waterlogging. At this height a sturdy cane is advisable in windy spots. Watch out for lily beetle and remove it early. Lilies are highly toxic to cats, as are the pollen and vase water. The bulbs overwinter in the ground; keep containers in a sheltered place.
