  • Red flowers with a yellow edge, around 15 cm
  • About 170–190 cm tall, ideal for the back of the border
  • Flowers in August with a moderate scent
  • Many flowers per stem, strongly recurved petals
  • Pollinator-friendly and a good cut flower

'Scheherazade' is one of the most stately lilies in the summer garden. In August, numerous large flowers in deep red with a golden-yellow edge open on sturdy stems and have a pleasant scent. With 10 bulbs you create an eye-catcher at the back of the border that returns every year.

About this variety

'Scheherazade' is a cross between Oriental lilies and trumpet lilies, a so-called Orienpet. It has the best of both parents: the vigour and height of the trumpet lilies and the large, richly coloured flowers of the Orientals. The petals curve far back and show a deep red that shades to golden yellow towards the edge. Each flower measures around 15 cm.

At about 170–190 cm tall, it clearly belongs at the back of the border or at the woodland edge. Lower perennials in front, such as daylilies, bee balm or dark-leaved heuchera, shade the base of the lily. Grasses such as fountain grass loosen up the planting. Because of its height, it is only partly suited to pots.

Its scent is especially noticeable on warm August evenings without being overpowering. Butterflies and other pollinators like to visit the open flowers. In the vase, one or two stems are enough for an impressive bouquet. Cut when the first bud opens and leave enough foliage on the plant so the bulb can build up strength for next year.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn from September to November or in spring from February to May. Set them 15–20 cm deep, about three times the height of the bulb, with around 20 cm spacing. The soil should be moist, loamy to sandy and free-draining. A sunny to partially shaded spot following the principle 'head in the sun, feet in the shade' is ideal.

Care

Water thoroughly in dry periods, but avoid waterlogging. In spring an organic fertiliser encourages strong shoots, and in windy spots a cane supports the tall stems. From the time shoots appear, check the plants for the red lily beetle. Lilies are highly toxic to cats, so keep the plant, pollen and vase water away from them. 'Scheherazade' is hardy in Switzerland, even at higher altitudes.
