  • Bright cobalt-blue flowers
  • Flowers from February to May
  • Long, narrow, grey-spotted leaves
  • About 25–35 cm tall
  • Tolerates heat and drought well

'Bertram Anderson' is a proven narrow-leaved lungwort with bright cobalt-blue flowers. It flowers from February to May above long, dark green leaves with grey spots. It tolerates heat and drought better than many relatives. A safe choice for shady spots.

About this variety

Pulmonaria longifolia is the long-leaved lungwort. On 'Bertram Anderson' the leaves are narrow, long and dark green with silver-grey spots, as if dabbed on with a brush. In spring clusters of cobalt-blue flowers stand above them. The variety is named after the British plantsman Bertram Anderson. In trials in Chicago it received the top score.

A partly shaded to shady spot with humus-rich soil is ideal; chalky soil is also tolerated. At about 25–35 cm tall the lungwort suits border edges, woodland edges and underplanting. Good partners are yellow daffodils, white wood anemones, hostas and ferns. The spotted foliage brightens shady areas into autumn.

The early flowers feed bumblebees and wild bees. The foliage stays attractive for a long time and is evergreen in mild areas. The plant is very hardy, even at higher altitudes. As seedlings do not come true, it is best propagated by division.

Planting

Plant 'Bertram Anderson' in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October. Set the plant in a planting hole twice the size of the root ball, with the root collar just covered. Space plants 30–40 cm apart. A partly shaded to shady spot with humus-rich soil is ideal. Water in well.

Care

Water during longer dry spells. Leaf compost in spring or autumn encourages healthy foliage. Cut off the faded stems, as they look untidy. Divide large clumps after flowering.
