  • Coral to brick-red flowers
  • Very early flowering from February to April
  • About 25–35 cm tall
  • Light green foliage as dense ground cover
  • First food of the year for bumblebees

'Bowles's Red' is a red-flowered lungwort and one of the earliest flowers in the garden. Coral to brick-red funnel-shaped flowers open from as early as February. The light green foliage then forms dense ground cover. With ten plants you can green shady areas under trees and shrubs.

About this variety

Pulmonaria rubra differs from other lungworts in its warm red flowers. On 'Bowles's Red' they are coral red and often appear while there is still snow nearby. The leaves are light green, softly hairy and only faintly spotted. They often stay green in mild winters.

Plant lungwort in partial or full shade, for example under shrubs or trees or at a woodland edge. At about 25–35 cm tall it works as ground cover and for border edges. Christmas roses, Lenten roses and hepaticas go well with it. The warm red glows beautifully next to white spring flowers.

The early flowers are an important first source of food for bumblebee queens. After flowering a lush carpet of leaves forms that suppresses weeds. Lungwort spreads slowly and is very long-lived. Dividing after flowering gives you more plants for new areas. Because the foliage is light and fresh, the plant still looks friendly after flowering and brings light beneath dark shrubs. The area stays attractive into autumn.

Planting

Plant 'Bowles's Red' in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and set the root collar just below the surface. Space plants 40–50 cm apart. A partly shaded to shady spot with humus-rich soil is ideal. Water in afterwards.

Care

Keep the soil moist; a shady spot is important in summer. Leaf compost in autumn is ideal. Cut off faded stems and attractive new foliage will grow. Divide large clumps after flowering.
