'Martagon Album' is the white form of the native martagon lily. Its pure white, nodding flowers roll their petals right back and look light and elegant. In May and June they float above the foliage and bring a cool brightness to the woodland edge and the natural garden.

About this variety

The martagon lily is at home in the Alps. 'Martagon Album' is its white form and looks even a touch more delicate than the pink wild species. The flowers nod on their stems, and the petals curl back like a small turban. Many flowers sit on one stem and open as early as May and June, sooner than most other lilies.

'Martagon Album' looks its best at the woodland edge, in a natural garden or among ferns and woodland perennials. The white glows against dark foliage and at dusk. It copes well with chalky soil. Good partners are columbine, hardy geranium or Epimedium. Plant several bulbs together to create a loose group. It is only partly suited to pots.

Single stems are lovely in the vase and give bouquets a natural, airy touch. Its greatest strength, however, is its staying power in the garden. Once established, it returns year after year and grows stronger over time. As it is hardy in Switzerland, it also thrives in exposed locations.

Planting

Plant the bulbs ideally in autumn, from September to November; spring planting from February to May is also possible. Set them 15–20 cm deep and 25–30 cm apart in free-draining soil, preferably chalky. A sunny spot with a shaded base suits it well. Martagon bulbs dry out quickly, so plant them as soon as they arrive.

Care

Leave the plants undisturbed, as martagon lilies establish slowly and sometimes only flower fully in the second year after planting. Water in dry spells, avoiding waterlogging. Watch out for lily beetle. Leave the foliage until it turns yellow. Lilies are toxic to cats.
