  • Fluffy, pure white flower clouds
  • Flowers from May to July
  • About 90–110 cm tall
  • Blue-green, columbine-like foliage
  • For partial shade and woodland edges

Thalictrum aquilegiifolium 'Album' is the white form of the columbine-leaved meadow rue. In early summer loose clouds of fine white stamens appear above blue-green, columbine-like foliage. The flowers look light and fluffy and bring brightness to partly shaded borders and woodland edges.

About this variety

The flowers of the columbine-leaved meadow rue have almost no petals. What you see are countless fine stamens, pure white on 'Album', gathered into soft powder puffs. Beneath them grows fine, blue-green foliage reminiscent of columbine. This makes the plant look delicate, although it is very robust.

At about 90–110 cm tall it belongs in the middle of the border or at a woodland edge. Partial shade and humus-rich, moist, loamy or clay soil are ideal. The white looks especially lovely next to violet bellflowers, hardy geraniums, hostas or ferns. In white gardens and at the edge of ponds it is a bright spot.

Bees and hoverflies visit the pollen-rich flowers. In the vase the stems last a few days and lighten up bouquets. The perennial is very hardy and long-lived. Where it is happy it may self-seed lightly. The sap can irritate the skin; do not eat any part of the plant. Plant three to five together to create a light, floating veil.

Planting

Plant in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October in a partly shaded spot. Dig a planting hole twice the size of the root ball and set the root collar just below the surface. Space plants 35–50 cm apart and water in thoroughly.

Care

Keep the soil moist and water during dry spells. Compost in spring is enough. Cut off faded flowers if you do not want seedlings. Divide older clumps in spring. Wear gloves when tending the plant, as the sap can irritate the skin.
