'Firebird' brings fiery colours to the garden: its flowers combine red and yellow and glow from afar. This Mignon dahlia grows about 90–110 cm tall and flowers in high summer. It suits beds, large containers and vases.

About this variety

The name fits: 'Firebird' bears flowers in bright red and warm yellow that together look like a small flame. As a Mignon dahlia, it has rather simple, open flowers that catch plenty of light. The colours do not stand still: depending on the flowering stage, either the red or the yellow comes to the fore. So a plant always looks a little different, depending on when you look.

In the bed, at around 90–110 cm tall, it sets strong accents. It harmonises with red hot pokers, bee balm, nasturtiums or bronze grasses. If you prefer something calmer, combine it with dark blue salvia. It is also happy in a large pot in a sunny spot. With its fiery tones it fits well into a warm-coloured bed that peaks in high summer.

The open flowers are easy to access and are readily visited by bees and hoverflies. For the vase, cut a few stems for a fiery summer bouquet. Regular deadheading encourages new buds. Together with sunflowers, zinnias or fennel, it makes a bouquet that brings summer into the house. Three or four stems are enough for small vases.

Planting

Plant the tubers outdoors after the Ice Saints (mid-May), 10–15 cm deep and 40–60 cm apart. From March you can start them off indoors. A spot in full sun is ideal. The soil should be loamy or sandy, moist and well drained.

Care

Water thoroughly in dry weather, but avoid waterlogging. Feed every two to three weeks in summer. A stake gives support. After the first frost, cut back the foliage, lift the tubers and overwinter them frost-free.
