Verbascum 'Jackie' is a compact mullein with warmly coloured flowers. Its spikes carry flowers in apricot to pink with a purple eye. It flowers from June to September in sunny, dry spots and at 45–55 cm stays low enough for border edges and pots.

About this variety

Mulleins are usually known as tall yellow figures. 'Jackie' is different: it stays compact and shows a subtle blend of apricot, peach and pink. The flowers open gradually along the spikes, which grow from a rosette of grey-green leaves. Purple stamens sit in the centre of each flower.

At about 45–55 cm tall it suits the front of the border, gravel beds and pots. It needs full sun and a free-draining, chalky, loamy or sandy soil. Lovely partners are woodland sage, catmint, lavender and blue bellflowers. It also looks natural among grasses.

Bees and bumblebees love the flowers. The spikes can be cut for small posies. Mulleins of this kind are fairly short-lived, but they flower long and abundantly. Cutting back faded spikes encourages new flowering shoots. In a pot on the terrace or balcony the subtle colour shows especially well up close. Together with silvery herbs such as thyme or sage it makes a small, Mediterranean-looking planting that needs little water.

Planting

Plant from March to May or in September and October in a spot in full sun. The soil must be very free-draining, as mulleins do not tolerate waterlogging. Dig a planting hole twice the size of the root ball and set the root collar just below the surface. Space plants 35–50 cm apart and water in.

Care

Water only during long dry spells. Feeding is hardly necessary; lean soil keeps the plant compact. Cut faded spikes back to ground level and new ones will grow. If you do not want seedlings, remove the seed heads.
