  • Several flower stems per bulb
  • Loose, natural-looking spikes in blue
  • Fragrant, flowering in April
  • About 25–35 cm tall
  • 25 bulbs for planting larger areas

Multiflora hyacinths send up several slender stems from each bulb. The blue flowers sit more loosely than on classic hyacinths and so look natural and light. In April, 25 bulbs turn a bed or pot into a fragrant blue carpet.

About this variety

The multiflora hyacinth looks different from its familiar relatives. Instead of one dense spike, it forms several slender stems with loosely spaced flowers. The blue is clear and fresh and is more reminiscent of a wild flower than a strictly bred garden form. Because the spikes are not so heavy, they hardly bend over even in rain and need no support.

At about 25–35 cm tall, it suits bed edges, borders and naturalistic corners. Plant the 25 bulbs in larger groups or as a band along a path. White daffodils, yellow primroses or early tulips are lovely partners. In pots and window boxes the many stems quickly fill the space.

The flowers are scented like classic hyacinths and are visited by bees. For the vase, cut whole stems, which look airy and light. In the garden the multiflora returns every year and fits well into a meadow with other spring bulbs. In natural gardens especially, the multiflora is a good choice, as it blends in rather than standing out. It also flowers reliably under open shrubs and returns year after year.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, or even in December if the ground is open, 10–15 cm deep and 12–15 cm apart. Set each bulb pointed end up. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal, as waterlogging makes the bulbs rot. Wear gloves when planting, as the bulb skins can irritate the skin.

Care

After flowering, pinch off the spent stem so that no energy goes into seed. Leave the green foliage until it turns yellow, as it feeds the bulb for the next season. In pots, water moderately and avoid waterlogging. As the sap can irritate the skin, gloves are recommended.
