  • Flowers in September and October
  • About 45–55 cm tall
  • Long-stemmed, long-lasting cut flower

The Guernsey lily is one of autumn's loveliest surprises. Umbels of clear pink flowers with narrow, wavy petals open on leafless stems. This South African species needs a warm, sunny spot and rewards patience with exotic colour when other plants have long finished flowering.

About this variety

Nerine bowdenii is a little reminiscent of a small amaryllis, but looks lighter and more playful. The pink flowers are held in umbels of eight to twelve; the petals are narrow, wavy and curved back at the tips. A fine, darker central stripe gives each flower definition. The leaves usually appear only after flowering.

At about 45–55 cm tall, it belongs in one of the warmest spots in the garden, ideally in front of a south-facing wall or in a sheltered gravel bed. It is also happy in a pot on a sunny patio. Japanese anemones, asters and sedums make suitable neighbours.

It lasts a long time in the vase and lends an exotic note to autumn bouquets. It is of no importance to bees and is unscented. It flowers best when the bulbs are tightly packed. A little patience pays off, as it often takes a while to get going in the first few years.

Planting

The best planting time is spring or late summer. Set the bulbs so shallow that the neck sits above the soil surface, 10–15 cm apart. Choose the sunniest, warmest spot in the garden, such as in front of a south-facing wall. Mix some grit into heavy soil.

Care

Nerines need a little patience in the first year or two, after which they flower reliably. Feeding is hardly necessary; too much nitrogen only encourages leaves. In winter, protect the bulbs with a layer of mulch, or overwinter them frost-free in a pot. Waterlogging is the greatest enemy.
