  • Strong magenta to dark pink
  • Strongly wavy, recurved petals
  • Flowers in September and October
  • About 45–55 cm tall, sturdy stems
  • Quickly multiplies into dense clumps

'Isabel' is a particularly richly coloured Guernsey lily. Its flowers glow in strong magenta to dark pink, with strongly wavy, recurved petals and a darker central stripe. In autumn it stands on sturdy, upright stems, and it multiplies quickly.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Isabel' look lively and playful. The narrow, crinkled petals curve backwards, with fine stamens protruding between them. Each petal carries a darker central line that gives the colour depth. In September the stems push up through the soil, and in October it is in full flower.

At about 45–55 cm tall, it suits the front of a sunny wall, a gravel bed or a pot. Five bulbs make a vivid group that becomes denser over the years. Combine it with silvery foliage, dark grasses or the white 'Alba' to make the magenta even more striking.

It is an excellent cut flower: the stems are long and firm and the flowers last a long time in the vase. Scent and pollinators play no great role. It needs a year or two to establish. After that it rewards you every year with colour at a time when the garden is otherwise growing quieter.

Planting

Set the bulbs shallowly in the ground in April, May or late summer, with the neck showing. Plant them close together, 10–15 cm apart, against a sunny, warm house wall. Sandy, free-draining soil prevents rot. In pots the bulbs may almost touch.

Care

Water only in spring while the leaves are growing; in summer the soil should stay on the dry side. Divide clumps only when they have become very dense. Cover with leaves or conifer brushwood in late autumn, and in colder areas move pots to a frost-free place. You can cut off faded stems.
