  • White with pink stripes and tips
  • Recurved, crinkled petals
  • Flowers from late September into October
  • About 45–55 cm tall
  • Newer variety, lovely cut flower

'Lipstick' is a newer Guernsey lily with a fresh play of colour. Its white, crinkled flowers have pink stripes and pink tips. From late September it flowers for weeks and brings a light, playful tone to the autumn garden.

About this variety

At first glance 'Lipstick' looks white; up close the pink appears. It runs as a stripe along the petals and gathers at the tips, giving a two-toned, almost striped effect. The petals are narrow, crinkled and curved back, and the stamens protrude a long way. As a result, each flower looks a little different.

At about 45–55 cm tall, it is ideal for a warm, sunny bed in front of a wall or for a pot on the patio. Five bulbs form a loose group. With sedums, silvery grasses or the strong pink 'Isabel' it creates a harmonious autumn picture. It is also happy in a gravel bed on the south side of the house.

'Lipstick' lasts a long time in the vase and goes well with rose hips, grasses and late roses. It has no scent, and bees take little notice of it. A sheltered, warm position where it can establish well is important. Then it flowers again every year as the days grow shorter. Its late flowering is exactly what makes it so valuable.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in spring or late summer so that the neck stays above the soil. A spacing of 10–15 cm is right, because nerines flower better when crowded. The ideal spot is sunny and warm, preferably at the foot of a south-facing house wall. The soil must be very free-draining.

Care

Water only in spring while the leaves are growing; in summer the soil should stay on the dry side. Divide clumps only when they have become very dense. Cover with leaves or conifer brushwood in late autumn, and in colder areas move pots to a frost-free place. You can cut off faded stems.
