  • Salmon-pink flowers with dark red basal blotches
  • Flowers about 10–15 cm across
  • Flowers in May
  • About 60–80 cm tall, with strong stems
  • Grey-green, deeply lobed foliage

'Mrs. Perry' is a classic Oriental poppy with large, silky flowers in soft salmon pink. At the base of each petal sits a dark, almost black blotch. The strong stems hold the cups upright, even in wind.

About this variety

Hardly any Oriental poppy looks as soft as 'Mrs. Perry'. The flowers grow 10 to 15 cm across and show a delicate salmon pink. At the base of the petals are dark wine-red to black blotches, with a ring of dark stamens in the middle. The foliage is grey-green and deeply cut.

At about 60–80 cm, 'Mrs. Perry' is a lovely focal point in a cottage garden or a sunny perennial border. Blue partners such as bearded irises, catmint or hardy geraniums emphasise the pink. As the foliage dies back after flowering and can look a little untidy, later perennials such as phlox or asters should stand in front. Plant several in a loose group for a soft pink island of colour in May. The strong stems hold the heavy flowers upright even in wind, so supports are usually unnecessary.

Bees like to visit the flowers. For the vase, cut buds already showing colour and treat the stem ends with hot water. Dried seed heads make a lovely decoration. 'Mrs. Perry' is robust and returns reliably every year.

Planting

Plant in spring (March to May) or autumn (September to October) in a sunny spot. The soil should be free-draining and not waterlogged. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and set the shoot buds just below the surface. Allow 40–50 cm between plants and water in.

Care

Once established, 'Mrs. Perry' needs water only during long dry spells. A little compost in spring is enough. Cut off faded flowers if you do not want seed heads. The foliage dies back in summer and can then be removed at ground level. Division is rarely necessary.
