  • Mid-pink flowers with many layers of petals
  • Heavily ruffled edges, reddish-black centre
  • Flowers in May and June
  • About 90–110 cm tall, vigorous growth
  • For sunny, free-draining spots

'Pink Perfection' bears large, mid-pink flowers made of many layers of tissue-paper petals with heavily ruffled edges, around a deep reddish-black centre. A strong, compact plant with fresh foliage for sunny borders.

About this variety

'Pink Perfection' looks lusher than many other Oriental poppies. Its flowers consist of several layers of thin, tissue-paper petals with heavily crinkled edges. The pure mid-pink contrasts beautifully with the dark, reddish-black centre. The plant grows vigorously and compactly.

At about 90–110 cm, 'Pink Perfection' stands well in the middle of the border. It suits peonies, bearded irises, lupins and columbines, which flower at the same time. Later, phlox, asters or grasses take over the space when the foliage dies back in summer. Oriental poppies are not very suitable for pots because of their deep roots. In the first year the plant stays a little shorter; from the second year it reaches its full size. The foliage stays fresh and green for a long time, so the gap after flowering is less noticeable than with other varieties.

Bees and bumblebees are welcome guests at the flowers. For the vase, cut buds just breaking open and dip the stems in hot water. The decorative seed heads can be dried. The perennial is long-lived and hardy.

Planting

Plant in spring (March to May) or autumn (September to October) in a sunny spot with free-draining soil. Avoid waterlogging. Make the planting hole twice the size of the root ball, with the shoot buds just below the surface. Space 35–50 cm apart and water in.

Care

Water only during long dry spells, as Oriental poppies cope well with dry summer soil. A thin layer of compost in spring is enough. Cut off faded flowers if you do not want seed heads. After flowering the plant dies back: cut the yellowed foliage back to ground level, and a fresh rosette of leaves will appear in autumn. Every few years you can divide large clumps in autumn.
