'Friso' is an OT lily, a cross between Oriental and trumpet lilies. It combines large, waxy flowers in strong red with a white edge and a delicate, fruity scent. With its stately height, it brings structure and colour to the back of the bed in high summer.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Friso' look as if they had been painted. An intense raspberry red fills the petals, which turn clear white at the edges. Fine greenish-yellow lines appear towards the centre. The petals are waxy and slightly recurved. As an OT hybrid, the variety combines the size of trumpet lilies with the elegance of Oriental lilies and gives off a delicate, fruity scent in July.

At about 140–160 cm tall, 'Friso' belongs at the back of the bed or at the woodland edge, where the flowers rise above phlox, bee balm or ornamental grasses. It also looks good next to white hydrangeas, which echo the white edge of the flowers. It is only moderately suited to pots, as it needs plenty of space for its roots and height. In the bed, it looks most striking in a group of three to five bulbs.

The strong stems are very good for the vase. Just a few flowers fill a large bouquet and the room with scent. When cutting, leave at least a third of the stem with its leaves. Bees and other pollinators like to visit the flowers. As 'Friso' is hardy in Switzerland, the clump grows stronger over the years.

Planting

The best planting time is autumn from September to November, though spring from February to May is also possible. Set the bulbs 15–20 cm deep and 25–30 cm apart in well-drained, humus-rich soil. A sunny to partly shaded spot works well. Shade the base with low perennials while the flowers stand in the sun.

Care

Water thoroughly in dry weeks and avoid waterlogging. In a windy spot, a stake gives the tall stems support. In spring and summer, watch out for the lily beetle and remove beetles and larvae by hand. Leave the foliage until it yellows. Lilies are poisonous to cats, including the pollen and vase water.
