  • White to pale pink flowers
  • Flowers from May to October
  • About 20–30 cm tall, for pots and indoors

Purple shamrock is one of the most beautiful foliage plants for pots and indoors. Its triangular leaves are deep wine red to purple and fold up every evening. Small white to pale pink flowers stand above them. Easy to care for and decorative at the same time.

About this variety

The leaves of Oxalis triangularis consist of three triangular leaflets in deep purple, often with paler markings. In the evening they fold up like small umbrellas and open again in the morning. This movement makes the plant feel alive. Delicate white or pale pink flowers appear above on thin stems. With the light behind them, the leaves glow almost ruby red.

At about 20–30 cm tall, it suits pots, bowls and window boxes. In summer it thrives outdoors in partial shade, and indoors on a bright windowsill. Next to green-leaved plants, silver foliage or the green Oxalis 'Regnellii', the purple is especially striking. It also looks lovely in a hanging basket or on a shady balcony.

The flowers are unscented and pollinators play hardly any role. The plant comes from Brazil and grows from small rhizomatous bulbs that multiply well. If it gets too crowded, simply divide it. Its leaves contain oxalic acid, so keep pets away. It is often given as a houseplant.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in pots indoors from March, or outdoors after the Ice Saints, from mid-May. Set them 3–5 cm deep in loose compost, 10–15 cm apart. A 20 cm pot holds five to eight bulbs. A bright spot out of strong midday sun is ideal.

Care

Keep the compost slightly moist but never wet. Feed weakly every three to four weeks in summer. In autumn bring the pot in before the frosts and either keep growing it as a houseplant or let it rest dry. Not suitable for eating; keep away from children and pets.
