  • Single white flowers with a yellow centre, approx. 14 cm
  • Moderate, pleasant scent
  • Flowers in May and June
  • Very sturdy stems, height about 90–110 cm
  • Foliage stays attractive after flowering

'Jan van Leeuwen' shows how beautiful simplicity can be: single, cup-shaped flowers in silky white around a bright yellow centre. The flowers have a pleasant scent and stand on remarkably strong stems. A robust, long-lived peony for anyone who likes things elegant and uncomplicated.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Jan van Leeuwen' resemble shallow bowls. Broad, silky white petals frame a dense heart of yellow stamens. At around 14 cm across, they look large yet light. In spring, red-speckled shoots push out of the ground, followed later by dark foliage that looks neat even after flowering.

At about 90–110 cm tall, the variety belongs in the middle or towards the back of a border. Its stems are among the sturdiest of all peonies, so it stays upright even after rain. It looks lovely between blue iris, catmint or dark red masterwort. At a woodland edge in light partial shade, the white shines especially brightly.

For the vase, 'Jan van Leeuwen' is a safe choice. The single flowers last a long time and bring a modern, clean note to any bouquet. Once well established, the perennial flowers reliably for many years in the same place without demanding much attention.

Planting

The best planting time for the rhizomes is autumn, from September to November; spring until May also works. Cover the eyes with only 2–3 cm of soil, otherwise the plant will not flower. Keep 70–90 cm from neighbouring plants. Choose a sunny to partially shaded spot with moist soil; lime is well tolerated.

Care

Water thoroughly in the first months and in dry weather; peonies do not tolerate waterlogging. In spring, add a little compost or organic fertiliser. Thanks to its strong stems, the variety rarely needs support, but a plant support ring helps in strong wind. Leave the plant undisturbed and do not move it. It is hardy in Switzerland; cut back the foliage in autumn and wear gloves when planting.
