Lilium regale, the regal lily, is a classic among wild lilies. Its white trumpets are flushed pink to wine red on the outside and have a yellow throat. The sweet scent drifts through the garden on summer evenings.

About this variety

The regal lily comes from the mountain valleys of western China and has been at home in European gardens for over a hundred years. Its buds are coloured pink to wine red, and when they open, white trumpets with a yellow throat appear. The back of the petals remains streaked with colour. Several flowers on each stem have a sweet, strong scent.

At about 140–160 cm tall, the regal lily is a plant for the back of the border. In the cottage garden it goes well with roses, delphiniums and lady's mantle. Its narrow foliage looks light and leaves room for its neighbours. It is only partly suited to pots and does best in garden soil.

As a cut flower it brings scent and elegance into the house. In the garden, pollinators visit the flowers, and in the evening moths too, drawn by the scent. Older bulbs produce so many flowers that support can be useful. Left undisturbed, the regal lily flowers for many years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn from September to November or in spring from February to May. Set them 15–20 cm deep, about three times the height of the bulb, with 20 cm spacing. A spot in full sun with free-draining soil is ideal; chalky and clay soil is tolerated as long as no water stands. The rule is 'head in the sun, feet in the shade'.

Care

Water moderately and avoid waterlogging. Give a bulb fertiliser in spring. Support strong plants with many flowers with a cane. Watch out for lily beetle. Lilies are highly toxic to cats, including the pollen and vase water.
