  • Red stalks with a fine flavour
  • For cakes, crumble and compote
  • About 90–110 cm tall
  • Harvest from April to the end of June
  • Hardy and long-lived

'Valentine' is a rhubarb with red stalks and a fine flavour. The stalks are ideal for cakes, crumble, compote and jam. The hardy perennial crops reliably for many years. Five crowns are enough for a generous rhubarb corner.

About this variety

Rhubarb belongs in every kitchen garden, as it provides the first fresh stalks as early as April. 'Valentine' forms red stalks that are easy to use. The large leaves spread like umbrellas and make the plant attractive to look at too. In early summer, creamy white flower panicles appear; break them off for a better harvest.

A sunny to partly shaded spot with deep, humus-rich soil is ideal. At about 90–110 cm tall and up to 100 cm wide, the plant needs room. It suits the edge of the vegetable garden, a cottage garden or a spot beside soft fruit bushes. Chives and marigolds are pretty companions.

Harvest the stalks by twisting and pulling them at the base. Do not harvest in the first year after planting, so the plant can establish well. From the second year you can harvest until the end of June. Well cared for, a rhubarb clump stays productive for ten years or more.

Planting

Plant 'Valentine' in autumn in September and October, or in spring in March and April. The planting hole should be twice the size of the crown and contain plenty of compost. Set the buds 2–3 cm deep and space plants 80–100 cm apart. Then water in.

Care

Water generously in dry weather. Compost or manure in spring and after the harvest keeps the plant vigorous. Never take more than half the stalks and harvest only until the end of June. Remove flower stems early. The leaves contain a lot of oxalic acid and are not edible.
